Microsoft to employ Halo voice actress for Siri rival, and also to to bring Cortana voice-assistant with Windows Phone 8.1 in April .report says

Jen Taylor, who played the role of AI character Cortana in the Halo video game series, will reportedly be the voice for Microsoft's personal assistant, set for a beta release on Lumia devices in April.

Video game fans became giddy last fall upon hearing that Microsoft was developing a Siri competitor for Windows Phone code-named Cortana, after the AI companion of protagonist Master Chief in the Halo series. Now, it looks like Microsoft is going all in on that sci-fi vision for its personal assistant: Jen Taylor, the actress who played Cortana, is onboard to become the voice behind the information service, Microsoft blog MSFTnerd reported Thursday.

Little else has been dug up regarding the progress of the Cortana project or its arrival other than that it would likely come in one form or another with Windows Phone 8.1 sometime in early 2014. MSFTnerd is claiming as much, slating a Cortana beta launch on Lumia devices for this April, which coincides with Microsoft's annual Build conference in San Francisco.
MSFTnerd is also saying that Cortana will make its way to the Bing app for iPhone this fall and American Xbox One and Windows users in 2015 with the release of Windows Threshold, Microsoft's next-generation OS currently in the works.

With the rise of personal assistants like Siri and more ambitious plans to weave them into much more than our phones -- as Google is doing with Google Now -- it's no wonder Microsoft is trying to differentiate its service with a pop-culture staple and a commitment to making it as true-to-the-original as possible.
And with films like Spike Jonze's "Her" popularizing the notion that our personal computing futures will be abound in human-like AI companions, a personal assistant with a distinct name, recognizable voice (at least to gamers), and well-developed personality thanks to multiple Halo releases has an undeniably cool factor. While it may not create an excess of Windows Phone converts, it will certainly influence the AI landscape if it does in fact arrive soon on desktops andtablets with Windows Threshold.
Earlier this month -- when Microsoft announced that the Xbox One had surpassed 3 million units in sales -- it omitted Halo when discussing upcoming Xbox One titles to celebrate. That caused many fans to bemoan the wait for what is presumably Halo 5, a flagship Xbox One title that currently has one ambiguous trailer, shown last May, to its name. A Microsoft PR spokesperson quickly confirmed that Halo would in fact be arriving by the end of the year.
As the Cortana personal assistant is built out, and most likely retains that moniker from code-named beta to full-fledged service, we can only assume that the Halo series and its iconic characters will become an even larger cornerstone of Microsoft's greater voice and AI efforts in 2014. Though for those privy to the Halo universe and the nature of Cortana's character, it will surely be interesting to see how Microsoft juggles the rollout of its service alongside this new Halo release and its potential plot points.

Additional information has reportedly been revealed about Microsoft's rumoured voice-assistant expected to act as Siri's counterpart in Windows Phones - Cortana.
According to MFSTNerd, the Twitter handle of a purported Microsoft source, the proposed voice-assistant is said to reach Nokia Lumia models by April this year and will be voiced by Halo's Jen Taylor, who is the voice behind the game's artificial intelligence (AI) character, Cortana.
Microsoft has been rumoured to be working on its voice-assistant feature since September, based on the character of the firm's own published gaming title.
The rumoured app made its first appearance back in September 2013, when screenshots of an early Windows  Phone build leaked online, listed as 'zCortana'. Reports by The Verge also showed some screenshots of Cortana which indicated that the service will offer weather information, notifications, and calendar, in addition to alarms and phone calls. The screenshots also indicated that the app will be location-aware, as well.
It has been also speculated that Cortana might arrive with the latest Windows Phone 8.1 OS for smartphones. Last month's report revealed that the Redmond-based company is gearing up to ship itsupcoming Windows  Phone 8.1 with two new features - a notification centre that can be accessed by swiping down from top of the screen, just like Android and iOS, apart from a voice-based assistant believed to be codenamed 'Cortana'.
It's worth pointing out that Windows  Phone already offers the TellMe voice-based assistant, although it's nowhere close to Apple's Siri or Google Now in terms of functionality and accuracy. It is yet to see what Cortana has in store for the Windows  Phone users.

Microsoft swallows Nokia's handset business for $7.2 billion with all purchases of the main assets of Nokia including mobile business

Two years after hitching its fate to Microsoft's Windows Phone software, Nokia collapsed into the arms of the U.S. software giant on Tuesday, agreeing to sell its main handset business for 5.44 billion euros.
Nokia, once the world's dominant handset maker, has failed to close a yawning lead opened up by Apple and Samsung in the highly competitive market for smartphones and will now concentrate on its networking equipment unit, navigation business and technology patents.
Nokia's Canadian boss Stephen Elop, who ran Microsoft's business software division before jumping to Nokia in 2010, will return to the U.S. firm as head of its mobile devices business - a Trojan horse, according to disgruntled Finnish media.
He is being discussed as a possible replacement for Microsoft's retiring CEO Steve Ballmer, who is trying to remake the U.S. firm into a gadget and services company like Apple before he departs, though it has fallen short so far in its attempts to compete in mobile devices.
"It's very clear to me that rationally this is the right step going forward," Elop told reporters, though he added he also felt "a great deal of sadness" over the outcome.
"I feel sadness because inevitably we are changing Nokia and what it stands for," he said.
In three years under Elop, Nokia saw its market share collapse and its share price shrivel.
In 2011, after writing a memo that said Nokia lacked the in-house technology and needed to jump off a "burning platform", Elop made the controversial decision to use Microsoft's Windows Phone for smartphones, rather than Nokia's own software or Google's ubiquitous Android operating system.
Nokia, which had 40 percent of the handset market in 2007, now has just 15 percent, and only 3 percent in smartphones.
Shares in Nokia surged around 35 percent to 4.01 euros by late Tuesday. While up from their decade-low of 1.33 euros hit last year, they are still only a fraction of their 2000 peak of 65 euros.
After today's gains the whole company is worth about 15 billion euros, a far cry from its glory days when it reached over 200 billion euros.
Tuesday's deal includes an agreement to license Nokia's patent portfolio for 10 years. Without it, Nokia's devices and services business would have been worth about 3.7 billion euros, the companies said.
Microsoft shares fell 6 percent to $31.40 in early U.S. trade.

SOLD FOR "PEANUTS"
While some investors have credited Elop for bringing urgency to Nokia, which has stepped up its pace of product development in recent months and is due to announce a "phablet"-type large-screen handset this month, his legacy will be a bitter one for Finland. The company, which began life as a paper mill and has sold an eclectic range from television sets to rubber boots in its 148-year history, was a national champion in its heyday, accounting for 16 percent of all exports.
Hired by former chairman Jorma Ollila, Elop was the first foreigner to lead it.
For many Finns, the fact that a former Microsoft executive had come to Nokia, bet the firm's future on an alliance with Microsoft, laid off about 40,000 worldwide and then delivered it into Microsoft's hands, was a galling snub to national pride.
"Jorma Ollila brought a Trojan horse to Nokia," a column in widely read tabloid Ilta-Sanoma said.
"As a Finnish person, I cannot like this deal. It ends one chapter in this Nokia story," said Juha Varis, Danske Capital's senior portfolio manager, whose fund owns Nokia shares. "On the other hand, it was maybe the last opportunity to sell it."

Varis was one of many investors critical of Elop's decision to bet Nokia's future in smartphones on Microsoft's Windows Phone software, which was praised by tech reviewers but hasn't found the momentum to challenge the market leaders.
"So this is the outcome: the whole business for 5 billion euros. That's peanuts compared to its history," he said.
Alexander Stubb, Finland's Minister for European Affairs and Foreign Trade, said on his Twitter account: "For a lot of us Finns, including myself, Nokia phones are part of what we grew up with. Many first reactions to the deal will be emotional."

Nokia's new interim CEO Risto Siilasmaa painted a picture of just how grudgingly the call to sell had been arrived at, describing how the board had met almost 50 times after the approach by Microsoft around February.
Ballmer, at a news conference in the Finnish capital, sought to assuage fears the deal would hit jobs in the Nordic country and said Microsoft would build on the recent growth of Nokia's flagship Lumia smartphones.
Nokia said it expected around 32,000 people of its roughly 90,000 worldwide staff would transfer to Microsoft, including about 4,700 who will transfer in Finland.
PIVOTAL FOR MICROSOFT
It is also a pivotal moment for Microsoft, which still has huge revenues from its Windows computer operating system, Office suite of business software and the X-Box game console, but has failed so far to set up a profitable mobile device business.
Microsoft's own mobile gadget, the Surface tablet, has sold tepidly since it was launched last year.
"It's a bold step into the future - a win-win for employees, shareholders and consumers of both companies," Ballmer said. "Bringing these great teams together will accelerate Microsoft's share and profits in phones and strengthen the overall opportunities for both Microsoft and our partners across our entire family of devices and services."
The move leaves the Finnish company with Nokia Solutions and Networks, which competes with the likes of Ericsson and Huawei in telecoms equipment, as well as a navigation business and a broad portfolio of patents.
The Nokia deal thrusts Microsoft deeper into the hotly contested mobile phone market, despite some investors urging it to stick to its core strengths of business software and services.
Elop will return to Microsoft as its board ponders a successor to Ballmer, who will depart in the next 12 months.
Activist fund manager ValueAct Capital Management, which has been offered a board seat, is among those concerned with Ballmer's leadership and his attempts to plough headlong into the lower-margin, highly competitive mobile devices arena.
Others applauded Ballmer's aggressive gambit.
"Microsoft cannot walk away from smartphones, and the hope that other vendors will support Windows Phone is fading fast. So buying Nokia comes at the right time," said Carolina Milanesi, an analyst at Gartner.
"In today's market it is clear that a vertical integration is the way forward for a company to succeed. How else could Microsoft achieve this?"
As part of Microsoft, Elop will head an expanded Devices unit. Julie Larson-Green, who in July was promoted to head a new Devices and Studios business in Ballmer's reorganisation, will report to Elop when the deal is closed.
FIRE SALE
Analyst Tero Kuittinen at consultancy Alekstra said the sale price of Nokia's phone business, about a quarter of its sales last year, represented a "fire sale level", though others were less clear about what a shrunken Nokia was worth.
The price agreed for the devices and services business gives it an enterprise value of about 0.33 times sales for a loss-making business, about half what Google paid for Motorola's handset business in 2012.
"What should be paid for a declining business, where market share has been constantly lost and profitability has been poor?" said Hannu Rauhala, analyst at Pohjola Bank. "It is difficult to say if it's cheap or expensive."
Nokia is still the world's No. 2 mobile phone maker behind Samsung, but it is not in the top five in the more lucrative and faster-growing smartphone market.
Sales of Nokia's Lumia series have helped the market share of Windows Phones in the global smartphone market climb to 3.3 percent, according to consultancy Gartner, overtaking ailing BlackBerry Ltd for the first time this year. Still, Google Inc's Android and Apple's iOS system make up 90 percent of the market.
Credit default swap spreads on Nokia tightened by more than 30 basis points to around 200 basis points after the news, meaning it now costs $200,000 to insure $10 million worth of Nokia debt, which is rated junk due to worries about its shrinking cash position and market share.
Nokia said in a statement it expected that, apart from Elop, senior executives Jo Harlow, Juha Putkiranta, Timo Toikkanen, and Chris Weber would transfer to Microsoft when the deal is concluded, probably in the first quarter of 2014.
Goldman Sachs acted as financial advisor to Microsoft, while JP Morgan advised Nokia, according to people close to the deal. Law firm Simpson Thacher represented Microsoft, while Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom represented Nokia, they said.

LeakyLeak: First Images of Nokia’s Upcoming Lumia 1520 Phablet Surface First alleged photo and Nokia Bandit = Nokia Lumia 1520

Nokia is reportedly prepping a new super sized smartphone called the Lumia 1520, and the phablet has seemingly emerged in its first-ever leaked photo. Windows Phone Central published the image on Wednesday evening, though it noted that the source of the photo is not a familiar one. The device pictured in the photo is believed to be real, however, and it represents several firsts for Nokia and Windows Phone.

For one thing, the Lumia 1520 will be the first Windows Phone device to fall into the “phablet” category thanks to its massive 6-inch display, which is even larger than the screen on Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note III. Nokia’s Lumia 1520 is also expected to be the first Windows Phone with a full HD 1080p display and the first with a quad-core processor.
Other rumored specs for the upcoming Lumia 1520 include a poly-carbonate case with a design identity similar to the Lumia 925, a 20-megapixel PureView camera and wireless charging support.
Nokia is expected to unveil the new Lumia 1520 during a press conference on September 26thalongside the company’s first crack at a Windows RT tablet.

The leaked photo follows below.

Nokia Lumia 1520 phablet revealed, dwarfs the Lumia 1020

Amazing  photo of the rumored Nokia Lumia 1520 Windows Phone with a 6-inch 1080P display

At the end of September, Nokia is reportedly going to reveal at least two new devices here in New York: their Windows 8 RT tablet, codenamed Sirius and the Nokia Lumia 1520 phablet.

The Lumia 1520 will feature a huge six-inch 1080P display, a polycarbonate body (not metal) with a 20 MP PureView camera akin to the Lumia 925’s design, specifications that we revealed last week from our verified sources. The device will also feature a quad-core Snapdragon CPU and Windows Phone 8 GDR3 for the new 1080P support.

The image above was leaked to us and while we cannot confirm it, we have a suspicion that is accurate. For one, it comes with what looks like an optional back case with a front cover to protect the display. We also wouldn't be surprised if it adds Qi wireless charging capability as well. It's placed next to what appears to be a Lumia 1020 for size comparison.

The other bit of evidence is that the display and bezel appear to closely match that of a leaked bezel from back in January, back when Nokia’s intention of making a phablet device were becoming clear. Everything from the Nokia label to the sensor locations to the thin bezel at the bottom appear to correspond. While not a slam dunk conclusion that at least favors a positive interpretation of the leaked photo.

We'll also note the standard proto.nokia.com etching at the bottom, as found on all Nokia tester phones.

Finally, with the display turned on we can see that as we would expect, there are three columns of Live Tiles now, including the ability to fit one double wide next to a medium sized tile. That feature would be needed due to the increased 1080P support found in GDR3.

The Nokia Lumia 1520 is expected to land on AT&T under the codename 'Bandit' and other carriers by November.

Windows Phone Central has not vetted the source of the image, so we cannot verify at this time. We will try to dig deeper and see what we can find.

How to encrypt files stored on our computer of different OS like LINUX,Windows,OSX of all with small details

How to encrypt files stored on our computer

Cases of espionage on the Internet by United States have served so many users become aware of the need to safeguard the privacy of your data. With the idea of improving the security of our information, we dedicate a few minutes to review methods to encrypt files in different operating systems.

How to encrypt files in Windows

Windows offers us the ability to encrypt the contents of folders, natively, from the operating system itself. In general terms, the process is fairly simple and not find too much complications beyond caution keep a safe place, the certificate necessary to decrypt the files.

The choice of encryption that includes Windows natively is, in my opinion, quite simple and I do not think that it is free from unauthorized access. Therefore, I think that we could handle other options and resort to other utilities of recognized solvency.

One of the most popular, and also used within the business sector, utilities is TrueCrypt. This application is a free software that allows us to encrypt information in Windows, OS X and Linux and offers several encryption options. Among other things, TrueCrypt allows you to encrypt the entire contents of the hard drive (including the boot partition), generate a real or virtual partition that is encrypted or, even, to create USB drives that store encrypted content. In addition to all these safety options, once we have the configured application, the process is transparent to the user and this will hardly notice interruptions in their work (with the advantage of having your data more safe).

AES Crypt is another option that is available both for Windows and for OS X and Linux and offers 256-bit AES encryption. In this case, the encryption of files and folders is somewhat more selective and we will be us who manually, we will indicate what we want to store safely. With the idea to make things easier, AES Crypt is integrated into the Windows context menu, so clicking on a file with the right mouse button you can encrypt it comfortably.

Another option to encrypt files without too many complications in Windows is AxCrypt which uses AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) encryption like AES Crypt, though, that Yes, 128-bit.

How to encrypt files in OS X

OS X also includes, natively, the ability to encrypt the entire contents of the hard drive on this operating system. FileVault, which is named this option can be activated from the system preferences (security option, enable FileVault and set a security password). FileVault offers 128-bit AES encryption and, obviously, to cover the content of the system hard disk, at certain times we can see some drop in the performance of the team having to always work with encrypted content.

An alternative more selective than FileVault is iSafe, a fairly cheap application (1.99 euros) that offers us the possibility of creating collections of files encrypted using 256-bit AES encryption. The operation, actually, is very simple; After setting a master password and enter it when starting the application, we will see the collection of encrypted files that we have on the basis of the defined categories (something like folders) and, for each collection, the stored files. With a provision of this form, if you want to store a file in a collection (and thus encrypt it), the only thing we have to do is "drag and drop".

Scrambler and Espionage are two alternatives of payment which, like iSafe, allows us to encrypt files in OS X without too many complications, and of course, being selective in the process (i.e., encrypting only what we want to protect and not entire hard drive).

How to encrypt files in Linux

Finally, for users who are freshly landed in the world of Linux either do not have advanced knowledge in the matter, it is important to know that you can also encrypt your files.

One of the methods known to encrypt files is GnuPG (GNU Privacy Guard) which, incidentally, is a component that requires Enigmail to encrypt emails in Thunderbird. Use is very easy to and, for example, from the Terminal we call gpg and, from the command line, encrypt files comfortably no more than indicate the password that we use for encryption.

eCryptfs is a more advanced option when it comes to encrypt files, a sort of extension of GnuPG applied to the file system with which we can improve the security of our directory home (our personal files). eCryptfs is packaged for multiple distributions and we can install it on Debian, Fedora, Gentoo, openSUSE or Ubuntu.

SeaHorse is a 'classic' project of Gnome that allows us to integrate GnuPG into this desktop environment so we can encrypt files without having to resort to the console. After installing this package we have at our disposal options to encrypt / decrypt files in the menu that appears when you press the right button of the mouse on a file or folder.

Nokia prepares a wave of smartphones with larger screens

The Finnish company does not extend through much less for his best time and Lumia terminals do not end off. It is a fact, its Windows Phone-based products are not having the desired success, even though that certainly have a good enough finish and great value for money, something that no doubt can blamed on strong competition presenting Android and iOS.

Nokia is aware of this and according to a rumor would have already hands to work in order to prepare the necessary shock with which to improve their results. What is the bet of the company? Smartphones with larger screens, a phablet and two new products with those who jump into the adventure tablet. We summarize the new line of products that would be preparing Nokia:

Tablets:

Two models, one with 10 screen, 5″ and another screen of 8, 5″.
Nokia Zoom camera technology.
Aluminium body.
Available in white, green, blue, black, yellow, pink and white.

Smartphones:

Lumia 525 with 4 screen, 5″.
Lumia 625 with 4 screen, 6″.
Lumia 725 with 5″ screen.
Lumia 825 with 5 display, 2″.
Lumia 926 with 5 display, 5″.

Phablet:

With a screen of 6″ to 7″.
He would arrive about mid-2014.

It is just that this leap towards larger screens have much to see support to resolutions 1080 p Windows phone of which I spoke a few days ago. At the moment we don't have specific release dates, so it is expected.
