Intel prepares Haswell renewal and Refresh processors for 2Q14 with 20 new processors


Intel prepares the renewal of Haswell with 20 new processors for desktop computers, including models Celeron, Pentium, Core i3, i5, and new top of range of series: Core i7-4790.

Which Intel marketed this spring (shipments in April 2014) are at least 20 different SKUs. No improvements in the overall architecture of the originals presented at Computex last in sight.

They will use the current socket LGA 1150 and although the launch of new chipsets Z97 and H97 is planned, will be compatible with motherboards today, surely with a simple BIOS update.

To highlight the new top of range of Haswell platform, Core i7-4790. A micro-processor with four cores and eight threads of native processing, frequencies of 3.6 to 4 GHz, 8 MByte of third level cache, graphics integrated Intel HD 4600 frequently maximum core-to 1200 MHz and a controller for DDR3 memory up to 1600 MHz.

Remember that since the launch of the Haswell last summer, Intel has updated the series with models such as the Celeron G1820, G1820T and G1830, the cheapest you'll find with the most advanced Intel architecture and between 48 and 56 dollars selling prices which focuses them to basic desktop PCs, mini-PCs or computers for home theater.

Already in the third quarter, we will have the renewal of the ' k ' of the Haswell versions with unlocked multiplier. On another level, also the Haswell-E, the first processors of the firm for the consumer sector with 8 physical cores and 16 threads of native  Processors 

And also 

Intel's next-generation Haswell Refresh processors are expected to become available in the retail channel in May, and the CPU giant will also start shipping its Z97 and H97 chipsets in April in order to enable motherboard players such as Asustek Computer and Gigabyte Technology to start selling related products at the end of the month.

Intel will then release its Haswell Refresh K series and Haswell-E in the third quarter and phase out its 

•  Core i5-3350P 

•  Core i3-3225  and

•  Core i3-3210 processors in the first quarter.

Intel prepares to launch in 2014 from Haswell-E, the first processors of the firm for the consumer sector with 8 physical cores and 16 threads of native processing.

Intel already has the consumer market more powerful processors in the LGA 2011 but still intends to raise with the new Haswell-E, which has been leaked the first sign of engineering.

Development for the enthusiast market compatible with the current socket LGA 2011 although if you want to take advantage of its full potential, you will have to change the motherboard in the same way, since it will come with new chipset X 99 (codename Wellsburg), offering six port USB 3.0 and ten ports SATA-III (6 Gbps) and major news: support for quad channel memory of new generation DDR4 and motherboards with three sockets.

The assigned TPD will be located at 140 Watts and the cache will increase up to 20 Mbytes in the models 'Extreme' most advanced with 8 cores and 16 threads of native processing.

With variants 'X' and 'K' bound to market enthusiast, to big gamers on PC, lovers of overclocking or semi-professional use of creative music, audio or video content. Intel Haswell-E would be available next year. Price we don't know but think the $1,000 barrier

What's reason that happened to Intel's failed TV ambitions?


Intel rented retail space in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago earlier this year in which it planned to launch and sell Intel TV: a new living room-based entertainment service that was described as "far superior" to existing cable and satellite packages by early users. But these stores won't ever see the launch of Intel's new service: Reuters reports Intel canned the TV project after new CEO Brian Krzanich decided the company "could not afford the distraction or expense" of creating a new product in a new market. Reuterssays Intel will instead focus on its chip manufacturing business, sell the OnCue technology it developed to enter the TV sector under the direction of "realist" Krzanich, and use the rented retail spaces to peddle an existing range of ultrabooks and tablets.

Mountain renews its line of servers and workstations


The well-known Spanish manufacturer has renewed its range of servers and work stations with a total of five new products, divided into two work stations and three servers.

With regard to the first group have the Mountain Studio 3Di7-E 4000 and Mountain Next-Gen i7-E 4000, while the second group include the Mountain Station, Mountain Server E5 and Mountain Storage Intelligence.

At the level of hardware based on Intel processors Core i7 Xeon E5 and fourth generation Xeon E3 and v2 v3, allowing them to offer an excellent level of performance on any task.

Intel announces agreement with Arduino by taking Intel family to a advanced future tech

Intel announces agreement with Arduino and Intel Galileo the CEO of Intel, Brian Krzanich, plate has announced a global collaboration agreement with Arduino LLC, introducing the first plate compatible Intel Galileo and announcing a program donation on a large scale by which deliver 50,000 units to 1,000 universities all over the world in the next year and a half.

Intel Haswell-powered laptops that contains on long battery of deliver of 4 items from MacBook Air from Apple, XPS 12 from Dell,Vaio Pro 13 from Sony,Aspire S7 from Acer

Just in time for the back-to-school season, new laptops with extended battery life are hitting store shelves.
What these laptops have in common are microprocessors that belong to a new family of Intel chips called Haswell. The chips consume less power than previous generations and promise a 50 percent boost in battery life for watching video. The improvements extend to word processing, Web surfing and other computing tasks as well.


Put another way, you can unplug your laptop in the morning and go a full day without a charge, with some breaks for meals, exercise and errands. The 13-inch (33-centimeter) MacBook Air, for instance, promises up to 12 hours of battery life. Three Windows machines I tried promise seven to nine hours. For students, that's a full day of cutting classes - and more. For business travelers, that's a cross-country flight including delays.
The catch
Slim, lightweight laptops with Haswell chips cost more than $1,000. Cheaper laptops will be heavier or come with older chips.
I reviewed Apple's MacBook Air and Dell, Sony and Acer computers running Microsoft's Windows 8. Samsung and other PC makers are just coming out with Haswell laptops, so you should expect even more choices by the holidays. The four I tested use solid-state flash drives, which keep laptops light but don't have as much capacity as traditional storage. They also lack Ethernet ports for wired Internet connections and slots for DVDs. Expect to use Wi-Fi a lot, though USB ports are available to connect devices. Base models come with 128 gigabytes of storage. You can spend a few hundred dollars more for additional storage and faster processors.
Here are the four Haswell laptops I tried, starting with the cheapest:
1. MacBook Air from Apple starts at $1,099 for 13-inch model
With a screen measuring 13.3 inches (33 centimeters) diagonally, the larger model weighs 2.96 pounds (1.34 kilograms) and costs $1,099. An even lighter, 11.6-inch (29.5-centimeter) version is available for $999, but promised battery life is just nine hours. Spend the extra $100 for three additional hours and a larger screen if you can afford it.
It's odd that the Air is the cheapest of the four I reviewed, as Apple's computers are traditionally pricier than their Windows counterparts. But in this case, the Windows laptops I tested all come with touch screens, something Apple has avoided in laptops on the premise that people don't want to lift their hands off the keyboard to use touch controls. The base model of the Air also has a slightly slower processor - at 1.3 gigahertz, compared with 1.6 gigahertz for the three Windows laptops.
Although promised battery life on the 13-inch review unit was 12 hours, I was able to get more than 14 hours once by turning off the Wi-Fi connection. I typically got nine to 11 hours for general Web surfing. Apple promises up to 10 hours for playing video downloaded from its iTunes store. I ran that test four times and got nine to 10 hours of playing the same episode of "Revenge" over and over. As with other laptops, performance drops significantly when streaming video over Wi-Fi, down to six to seven hours of Hulu.
Beyond having a long battery life, the Air is a solid machine that is easy to hold and carry. Although its aluminum exterior is easy to scratch and dent, I feel comfortable banging it around in my backpack because it has few moving parts that might be susceptible to damage. I even ran four miles home with it once.
Only the 13-inch model has a slot for SD memory cards.
Apart from its limited storage compared with laptops with regular hard drives, the MacBook Air will work fine as a primary computer. However, if you need an even more powerful laptop, see if Apple will update its MacBook Pros with Haswell this fall.
2. XPS 12 from Dell starts at $1,200
The XPS 12 is part of a category called ultrabooks - slim and light laptops, much like MacBook Airs, except they run Windows. The XPS 12 is also a convertible. The screen spins like a pig roasting on a spit. In one position, you get a laptop. Spin it 180 degrees, close the lid, and you have yourself a tablet. Magic.
Unfortunately, the XPS 12 is on the heavy side. The base model is 3.35 pounds. On paper, it's less than a half-pound heavier than the Air. But in practice, it feels heavy - especially as a tablet, at more than double the 1.44 pounds for the full-size iPad. The XPS 12 is alone in lacking an SD card slot, and its 12.5-inch screen is the smallest. But it is also the only one to have physical volume buttons on the side, and it's more affordable than the other two Windows laptops I reviewed.
Promised battery life is about 8.75 hours. I got nearly 8.5 hours for word processing, spreadsheets and other tasks that didn't need Wi-Fi. With wireless turned on, I got 7.5 to eight hours of use. Like the other two Windows machines, I got five to six hours of iTunes video. That's about half of what I got on the Air, but Apple has the advantage in being able to optimize its hardware for the software it also designs. I got about 5.5 to six hours of streaming video on Hulu, which is just about an hour less than what I got on the Air.

I did have some trouble with the battery losing its charge quickly when not in use, but a software update seems to have fixed that. That said, the XPS 12 took up to four hours to get a full charge, compared with two hours or less for the others.
What I like most about the XPS 12 is the fact that it automatically disables the on-screen keyboard when in laptop mode. On the Acer and the Sony laptops, the touch keyboard gets in the way when you already have a fully functioning keyboard attached. Tablet computers need that keyboard, so it comes back automatically when you flip the screen into a tablet. It's a smart strategy that I wish all other Windows 8 computers would adopt.
3. Vaio Pro 13 from Sony starts at $1,250
The Pro is an ultrabook that's light. Very, very light.
The 13.3-inch (33.8-centimeter) laptop weighs just 2.34 pounds (1.06 kilograms), only 60 percent more than an iPad. Sony uses carbon fiber to keep it light. It feels to me like cheap plastic that's about to break because it bends. But Sony assures me that it's more durable than aluminum. And Sony says the fact that it bends isn't a sign of weakness but a characteristic that lets it absorb shock. The base model starts at $1,250, though you can save $100 with an 11.6-inch (29.5-centimeter) Vaio Pro 11 instead.
I was ready to hate the Pro 13 because the cursor keeps jumping around when I type, making it difficult to complete sentences. But I tried three machines without problems at a Sony store in New York. Turns out I had to download a piece of software to give me settings for touchpad sensitivity. I had two weeks of frustrations until then, though Sony tells me most consumers won't need the separate download.
Once that got fixed, the laptop worked fine. The laptop hinge serves as a kickstand when open to prop up the keyboard, making it slightly easier to type.
I consistently got more than the seven hours of battery life promised for general Web surfing and word processing. I reached 8.5 hours once with Wi-Fi turned off. Battery life drops below six hours, though, for iTunes video download and Hulu streaming. If you do a lot of that, you can add a spare battery for $150, doubling the battery life. The system is still less than 3 pounds with the spare battery attached. The other units I tried won't let you replace batteries or insert a spare at all.
4. Aspire S7 from Acer starts at $1,450
The Aspire has what I want in a laptop, except for the price.
The laptop's aluminum body is covered on one side with glossy white glass. It reminds me of a refrigerator, but I came to appreciate the durability it brings once I started lugging it around. It's also fairly light, at 2.87 pounds (1.3 kilograms).
You can flip its screen all the way back so that both the keyboard and the screen are level with the surface, just like a tablet on a tabletop. I can't think of any scenarios in which I would need that, though Acer says it's good for presentations. Just press Function-O on the keyboard and the image on the screen rotates 90 degrees at a time, allowing you to show something to others sitting at your table.


Acer's website promises eight hours of battery life. I exceeded nine hours with Wi-Fi off and got seven to 8.5 hours of general Web surfing. But I got less than six hours of iTunes video and Hulu streaming.
Two complaints about the design: The power button is near the hole for the charger, so I accidentally turned the machine off by mistake several times. Acer also places the "page up" and "page down" keys next to the arrows to move the cursor. So instead of moving the cursor one line up, I've often moved it a whole page up or down and lost my train of thought.
I also had the cursor jump around when I first used it. A replacement unit Acer sent me to review worked without a hitch. I eventually noticed the first machine had the touchpad-sensitivity settings missing, even after resetting the unit to factory conditions and downloading new software for the touchpad.
My advice is to check return policies in case you run into trouble. The MacBook Air worked well out of the box, but the three Windows machine all required software adjustments. If you want a touch screen, you'll need to go with Windows 8.
Whatever you choose, these are all great machines that will give you several hours of use on a single charge - as long as you can afford them.

Intel Ivy Bridge-small details and its Price



Intel prepares launch in September of the new enthusiast platform, Ivy Bridge-E, more powerful processors of consumption market of those who come to us their unofficial sale price.

As you know, following the launch of the Haswell and before arrival at end of year of the new Atom, Intel will commercialize the Ivy Bridge-E, microprocessors for socket LGA-2011 desktop machines, substitutes the current Sandy Bridge-E and the head of the market for performance.

Will be three models to market of Ivy Bridge-E according to the roadmap of Intel: Core i7 - 4960 X, Core i7 - 4930K and Core i7 - 4820K.

The most potent and that you offered your test, would be Core i7 - 4960 X with six cores and 12 threads of native processing, 15 Mbytes of third level cache, frequencies up to 4 GHz with Turbo Boost, quad channel memory support to 1866 MHz and a TDP set at 130 Watts.

The Core i7 - 4930 K would be the intermediate model, also with six cores and 12 threads but with 12 MB of cache and working frequencies up to 3.9 GHz with Turbo Boost. The third list model would be the Core i7 - 4820K, with quad-core processing, 10 Mbytes of L3 cache and 3.9 GHz frequencies.

Their prices would be in line with the current Sandy Bridge-E topped the range in the $1,000 barrier as you can see in the image compared to the current models:

 
The new Ivy Bridge-E would be available starting on September 4 and will be compatible with current plates LGA-2011 and chipset 79 X through a simple BIOS update.

Ivy Bridge-E: Core i7-4960X details

Disclaimer: The following preview is based on an early engineering sample Core i7-4960X. Intel was not involved in the story, and was not asked for comment prior to its publication. In fact, starting with our Haswell preview, the company started a policy of excluding us from certain discussions. So yeah. There’s always more of that to look forward to.
Recently, Gartner published numbers showing that shipments of PCs dropped a staggering 11 percent in the second quarter of this year, primarily attributed to tablets replacing entry-level machines. Wall Street, at least, is all doom and gloom about the PC’s future prospects.
But the boutique builders I talk to say that interest in super-fast gaming systems is at an all-time high thanks to the efficiency of certain processor and graphics architectures. So, while now might be a bad time to get stoked about mainstream hardware, performance-oriented power users have some pretty quick components to choose from.
None of this is news to enthusiasts. In fact, two and a half years ago, Intel’s sandy bridge architecture  was serving up compelling performance under 100 W. Those were exciting times. The Ivy Bridge architecture that followed nudged our benchmark results forward a bit, but dropped power to less than 77 W. That was pretty cool, too. More recently, Haswell added another few percentage points to the performance picture, but bumped maximum consumption back up to 84 W.
Now, if you’re upgrading an old Core 2- or Phenom II-based machine with a $5000 boutique build, the latest parts are going to feel wicked-fast, no matter how incremental the previous two or three generations look on paper. The difference is simply less perceptible to those of us working with these components day in and out.
The point is that, for a do-it-yourselfer like me, Sandy Bridge was exciting, Ivy Bridge a little less so, and Haswell…well, I called that one The Core i7-4770K Review: Haswell Is Faster; Desktop Enthusiasts Yawn.
We all know where Intel’s collective mind is: the mobile space where those Gartner guys are telling us the low-end PCs continue getting slaughtered. In that context, spending $350 on a -4770K and another $250 on an LGA 1150-capable Motherboard just to keep up with the Kardashians doesn't sound so hot.
If, a year and a half ago, you snagged a Core i7-3930K (which won a very rare Best Of award from us in Intel Core i7-3930K And Core i7-3820: Sandy Bridge-E, Cheaper), you’d still be sitting pretty, potentially overclocked to 4.5 or 4.6 GHz, and outclassing the just-released -4770K in a great many threaded applications. You’d also be using the same X79-based platform. And, with the revelation that Intel’s upcoming Ivy Bridge-E architecture will drop into an LGA 2011 interface, you’re also going to face your first opportunity in two years to buy something faster.

Meet Ivy Bridge-E, The Upgrade Path For X79 Express

Right now it looks like Ivy Bridge-E-based processors will launch in September, putting us a couple of months out. Multiple models are expected, but I’ve only seen official specifications for two: the Core i7-4960X and Core i7-4820K. Earlier leaks showed thatthe -4960X would be a six-core CPU, while the -4820K hosts four cores. Purportedly there’s a Core i7-4930K in there as well, though I haven’t received one yet.
From most angles, the Ivy Bridge-E-based parts look a lot like Sandy Bridge-E, except for the adoption of Intel’s Ivy Bridge architecture. That means a handful of IPC-oriented improvements in the core, cache, and memory controller, similar to what we described in Intel Core i7-3770K Review: A Small Step Up For Ivy Bridge. Of course, gone is the emphasis on graphics. That means Ivy Bridge-E is really about the updated core, a memory controller rated for 1866 MT/s (instead of 1600), official PCI Express 3.0 compliance (remember, Sandy Bridge-E only claimed 8 GT/s signaling support), and 22 nm manufacturing. Ivy Bridge-E-based CPUs should also be unlocked up to 63x multipliers (versus SNB-E's 57x), you should be able to hit memory data rates beyond 2400 MT/s, Ivy Bridge-E supports XMP 1.3 (compared to SNB-E's XMP 1.2), and you'll have access to real-time ratio, voltage, and power limit settings.
You still get 40 lanes of PCI Express connectivity, divisible into as many ports as you need for four-way CrossFire and SLI. You’re still dealing with a quad-channel memory controller, though the higher data rate increases peak bandwidth to 59.7 GB/s from 51.2 GB/s. And you’re dropping Ivy Bridge-E into the aging X79 Express platform. The good news is that your old motherboard still works; you don’t have to buy a new one. Unfortunately, the chipset only offers two SATA 6Gb/s ports, it doesn’t feature native USB 3.0, and you don’t get to enjoy new capabilities like SATA Express, which will surface alongside Haswell-based 9-series chipsets early in 2014.

Again, Core i7-4960X is going to be a six-core part with 15 MB of shared L3 cache. No doubt that’ll disappoint the folks who were hoping a 22 nm process would make it easier for Intel to arm enthusiasts with eight or 12 cores. But, assuming the company plans to charge the same $1000, there’s really no reason to give you a more complex CPU when it’s already charging $1900 for an eight-core Xeon E5-2687W. And so, anyone considering a move from today’s Core i7-3970X can expect an additional 100 MHz base frequency, the same 4 GHz peak Turbo Boost clock rate, and the other incremental improvements.
The Core i7-4820K is a little more interesting. Realizing that there was almost no reason at all anyone would want a multiplier-locked, quad-core -3820, Intel gives its successor an unlocked ratio. It’s still a quad-core chip with 10 MB of shared L3 cache based on a previous-gen architecture in a previous-gen platform. But perhaps the additional PCI Express connectivity, memory bandwidth, and L3 cache, coupled with the ability to overclock, makes the -4820K a little more competitive against Intel’s Haswell-based Corei7-4770K.  
Curiously, both planned Ivy Bridge-E-based parts are accompanied by 130 W thermal design power limits. Remember that the move from Sandy to Ivy Bridge yielded a more complex CPU with a significantly lower power ceiling, thanks in no small part to a shift from 32 to 22 nm manufacturing. Here, we have the same process transition, but no real change in complexity—and yet the same 130 W rating as Core i7-3960X and -3930K. Keep an eye on this. Power may just become Ivy Bridge-E’s greatest strength.

Sony VAIO Pro details and definitely cool opponent to Macbook pro

 My go-to laptop buying advice has been the same for the last two years, at least for anyone who doesn't know their PRAM from their Linux kernel. Oh, you're looking for a new laptop? Buy a MacBook Air. Apple's cheapest and lightest notebook is the easy choice – it's fast enough, has a fantastic keyboard and trackpad, has solid battery life, and comes with few of the quirks and issues that plague nearly every Windows device on the market.
This year, every PC manufacturer is determined to change that. Toshiba's Kirabook offers the specs, size, and even service of Apple's best; nearly every other manufacturer has renewed its focus on quality as well. Rather than race to the bottom and leave Apple alone at the top, Windows-powered PCs are creeping back up to Apple's level.
Sony's not even pretending about its designs for the new VAIO Pro lineup. "We're going to war with the MacBook Air," VAIO product manager Travis First told me. Its weapons? 13- and 11-inch laptops that are lighter than Air — not to mention higher-res, with better specs and a near-identical price tag ($1,149 for the 11, $1,249 for the 13)


Lighter than Air :-
You can't beat the MacBook Air without being insanely thin and light, so Sony made sure the Pros were both. The 13-inch model weighs just 2.34 pounds, and is 0.68 inches thick – it's exactly as thin as the comparable Air, and more than a half-pound lighter. The 11-inch Pro is equally thin, but weighs an astonishing 1.92 pounds — when I first took it out of its box I hunted for a battery, because I figured there was no way it could be as light as it is. Given everything inside the Pros, from a touchscreen to an impressive set of internal specs, these laptops are incredible feats of engineering.



Thin and light takes a toll, though. Both Pro models feel flimsy and breakable — every time I picked my Pro up by its corner, its carbon fiber body flexed a lot more than I'm comfortable with. The lid gives backward when you tap on the screen; the whole tray moves downward as you type. The problems are far worse on the 11-inch model than the 13 — the 13 flexes a little while the 11 appears to be on the verge of coming apart at all times — but in both cases I have this nagging fear that I'm either going to break off a piece of the computer or accidentally press straight through it and come out the other side. The Air feels much more durable, as does Toshiba's Kirabook, which is probably the VAIO Pro's most direct competitor at the moment.
Update:- I initially believed there was only one color option for each Pro model. I've changed my thoughts here and in the keyboard section (the color affects the keyboard, believe it or not), and changed the score to reflect what's really going on.
Each size comes in one of two colors, a chrome silver or chrome black. I much prefer the black, not least because it disguises the scratches and dings the laptops seem to pick up very easily. (My silver 11 already looks like my iPhone 5, with tiny blemishes littering its edges.) It's also just a sleeker, cooler look, with the big reflective VAIO logo shining on the otherwise dark, almost ominous device. The matte keyboard tray and brushed-metal palmrest give it a unique two-toned look I quite like. My review units each have two blue stickers on the palmrest, but Sony says they'll be black or silver to match your computer — I'd rather them be gone, but at least they'll match
The wedge-shaped sides trape toward nothingness, ending in a tiny, sharp corner that digs a bit into your palm as you hold the Pro by its corner. The corners dig into your leg, too, if you use the Pro on your lap — the screen rotates slightly down below the base, propping the keyboard at the slightest of angles, and the sharp corners might either catch your jeans or scrape your bare legs. Between that and the build-quality problems, you're definitely better off using this laptop on your desk.




The two colors and sizes of VAIO Pro share most features, most strengths and weaknesses, but there's one glaring difference between the two: the keyboard. Namely, the 13's is decent and the 11's is terrible. The 13's propensity for flexing downward with every keystroke makes typing feel a bit mushy, but the keys are big and well-spaced, and while there aren't enough function buttons (and they're the secondary options on their respective keys) the basics are at least covered. It's a perfectly solid keyboard.
The Pro 11, on the other hand, is a mess. The computer itself is so small that the keys have to be tiny and cramped, but the real problem is the backlight in the silver version. The light shines brightly and haphazardly out the sides of the keys, and through the letters themselves on the translucent silver keyboard (the 13's keys are black and opaque).
With the backlight on, it's hard to even see the labels on the keys. Not only is it ugly, it makes it feel like you're typing on an empty keyboard, left only to your own touch-typing devices. It's clear not a single ounce of attention was paid to the backlight here — it single-handedly kills the aesthetic appeal of my Pro 11 when it's on, and makes it harder to use besides. I can't stress this enough: buy the black VAIO Pro.

The trackpads on both models are fairly similar — they're center-located, slightly recessed, glassy clickpads that feel great but don't always work right. Generally they're fine, smooth and responsive, but as I've seen with too many Windows 8 laptops, they can be crotchety. Edge gestures are inconsistent, working once but not again two seconds later, and the cursor would occasionally just stopped moving for a while, then jump to some random spot on the screen, then freeze again until you reboot the computer. (This happened three or four times in a week.) Suffice to say I quickly switched to using keyboard shortcuts rather than edge gestures.
I also found myself leaning on the touchscreen a lot — but that had its own issue







Now you see me :-

I've spent months railing on PC manufacturers for using low-res screens, defaulting to 1366 x 768 resolutions while their best competitors moved up to 1080p and beyond. Sony's jumped wholeheartedly onto the high-def train, and has as such given both Pro models a 1920 x 1080 screen. Both are good displays, with solid viewing angles and accurate, contrast-rich colors. Things that look good look great, but until Microsoft makes Windows scale better to accomodate higher-res displays, pixel density isn't everything it's cracked up to be.

On the 11-inch Pro, for instance, most websites render absolutely tiny, with almost unreadably small text and a huge amount of white space. For instance, The Verge is 1020 pixels wide, which means that unless you zoom way in you're left with 450 pixels of white on either side, and our site only takes up about half the screen. Text is sharp and clear, and the pixel density is ridiculous, but everything from icons to websites is just small. Even 1080p video renders things so small on the 11.6-inch screen that you just can't see small details — it's kind of like watching your TV from six rooms away. You can change the DPI to 150 percent (in the Control Panel, under Appearance), and you probably should — though that sort of defeats the purpose of such a high-res display, and doesn't affect every app anyway. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'd almost rather have a 1440 x 900 display, or maybe something like the MacBook Pro's 1680 x 1050 screen. Apple and Google have figured out how to scale their operating systems to high-res displays. Why can't Microsoft?

Just by virtue of screen real estate, the 13-inch model avoids most of these problems. And with enough room to operate, the VAIO Pro's display is fantastic. Touch response is excellent, the screen is viewable from even the most insane angles, and as Microsoft and its developers adapt to this crazy new high-res world we live in, you'll probably want a 1080p display. Just get ready for a lot of squinting in the meantime.
The Pro's sound comes through the keyboard, and here's one place where Sony copies Apple to its peril: the speakers aren't anything to write home about. They're not very loud, or very clear – they're not necessarily any worse than most laptop speakers, but that's not something to be proud of






The Windows effect :-

Both VAIO Pro models run Windows 8, to varying effect. The 11 starts on a 1.6GHz Core i5-4200U processor and 4GB of RAM, while the base 13 has a 1.8GHz Core i7-4500U and 4GB of RAM — both are Intel's new Haswell chips. The 13 also comes with a PCIe SSD, an even faster drive than a standard SSD. (My 13-inch review unit came with 8GB of RAM and a larger 512GB drive instead of the baseline 128GB.) The base-model 11 is plenty capable for most things, but I noticed stutters and lags in places I didn't on the 13-inch model — you might want to go beyond the base model of either machine, because a 1080p screen clearly needs a lot of power. 8GB of RAM made for a better multitasking experience, too — that's always a worthy upgrade.

Both Pro models do share a couple of troubling issues. Wi-Fi is the worst: neither laptop ever connected to a Wi-Fi network on the first try, they'd often not see networks other devices recognized, and I saw the infuriating "Limited Connection" icon way too many times. I have no idea why it happened, but along with the trackpad's skittishness it made for a number of really annoying moments using these devices.


The bloatware story is the same on both Pros, as well as on most Windows laptops. There are a dozen or so pre-installed apps, from Sony's own Music by Sony and Album by Sony (clever names, right?) to iHeartRadio and a handful of Microsoft games. The only two I really used were Socialife, Sony's surprisingly useful app for managing all your social networks in one spot, and Sony's impressive ArtRage Studio drawing app. Kaspersky Internet Security and Intel Anti-Theft rear their annoying, popup-loving heads, reminding you every few minutes that your computer is definitely going to explode unless you upgrade from their trial mode to the real thing. Everything can be uninstalled without too much effort, should you so desire.
Haswell, Intel's latest generation of PC processors, promises big improvements in both graphics performance and battery life. In the former case, I noticed only slight improvements — you're still not going to want to play games on the VAIO Pro, and anything as intense as Bioshock Infinite or even Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is completely unplayable. Battery life, on the other hand, appears to be a wonderful upgrade. The 11-inch Pro lasted 6 hours, 30 minutes on the Verge Battery Test, which cycles through a series of popular websites and high-res images at 65 percent brightness; the 13-inch model chugged along for 6 hours, 53 minutes before giving up. Those are fantastic, MacBook Air-beating numbers, and they bode well for Haswell processors in general. There's an optional sheet battery for each device that promises to double the battery life, but unfortunately I didn't have one to test.
